Reed was born in Beckley, West Virginia, the only child of Don Knox Reed (1902-1965), a coal miner and millworker who attended the nearby Bluefield State Teachers College on a scholarship, and his wife Thelma Mandel Reed (1904-1978). Reed’s great-great-grandfather was John B. Reed who fought in the American Civil War on the side of the Union army as an artilleryman; his grandfather was also a coal miner.
